HOW TO USE THIS WIKI

Page history last edited by Pam Sykes 15 years ago

A wiki is just a set of web pages that anyone can edit. There is no scary tech stuff involved -- the most famous example is Wikipedia, and even my mom uses Wikipedia.

In the first version of this FlyingSolo wiki, all you had to do to edit the page and add your name for one of the events was click a link that said "edit this page". This was a really easy system to use, but it had one huge drawback: spammers could edit it just as easily as the rest of us.

So, the nice people who organise this wiki hosting site upped the security a bit, and now you have to be approved by an administrator before you can add your name.

It's still pretty simple, though. Here's how it works:

  1. Look at the right-hand side of this page. You should see a link that says  "To join this wiki, request access." Click on the link.
  2. Fill in your email address, and a brief note about who you are so we can tell that you're a real person and not a spambot.
  3. Fill in the little confirmation field and click "send to administrator" (that's us).
  4. Once a day or so (to keep things manageable) we will authorise all requests. When this happens, you will get an email confirming that your request was approved.
  5. Come back to the page, log in to edit it, and fill in your name.

It's as easy as that! But if you still battle, send us a message and we'll try to sort you out.

PS We promise that FlyingSoloSA will NOT use your email address to contact you for anything except FlyingSolo -- and needless to say we won't give it to anyone else either. We not in any way connected to or affiliated with PBWiki so we can't speak for them, but we've been using their service for over a year now and they haven't spammed us yet, so we think they can be trusted (we have friends who've been using it for even longer).

PPS If you find that you are getting more email than you want and you FEEL like you're being spammed, it's probably because you are signed up to receive updates every time this wiki changes. To stop the updates, click on "account" under your email address at the top right-hand corner of this page, and then click the "Home" tab on the "My PBwiki" page. This will list all the wikis you're part of, and you can enable and disable email notifications from this page.
